Chin Manasmontri
Chin Manasmontri is the personable and charismatic manager of Mairood Resort, a charming family retreat in the Trat Province of Thailand. Born and raised in Bangkok's bustling Chinatown, Chin's journey has been both rich and diverse.
At 19, Chin moved to Orlando, Florida, for college, balancing his studies with summer jobs as a houseboy in Nantucket. After earning a bachelor's degree and an associate degree in accounting, he settled in Nantucket and opened "Chin's Thai Restaurant." He became a beloved community figure, renowned for his exquisite craftsmanship of Lightship baskets and Sailors' valentines, both celebrated Nantucket traditions. His contributions to the community were honored with a street named after him: Chinsway.
After 45 years in America, Chin returned to Thailand to manage Mairood Resort, which was opened in December 2004 to help those affected by the tsunami. The resort beautifully blends Chin's Thai heritage with his Nantucket experiences, featuring a charming shabby-chic décor that evokes the spirit of both locales.
Chin is a passionate cook who loves fusing traditional Thai and American cuisine, sourcing fresh seafood from the local fishing village. Guests at Mairood Resort can frequently find him in the kitchen, sharing recipes and cooking techniques, or in his workshop crafting Lightship baskets and Sailors' valentines for shipment back to Nantucket. Always eager to share his passions with others, he offers classes in cooking and crafting Nantucket baskets and Sailors' valentines.
An animal lover, Chin also cares for several rescue dogs who can be found happily lazing around the resort.
Mairood Resort is nestled in a traditional fishing village that evolved from a Cambodian refugee camp established in 1979. The resort is welcoming and unpretentious, reflecting Chin's warm and engaging personality, and providing guests with a unique and memorable experience.
